Using on for forms of public transport
Although on is used for boarding many forms of public transport, students often wrongly extend this to taxis and cars:
He ran down and got on a taxi and told the driver to go to the Sunshine Hotel. (TeleNex Students)
The correct preposition for boarding taxis and cars is in:
He ran down and got in a taxi and told the driver to go to the Sunshine Hotel.
One way of remembering is that you have to bend down to get into a taxi or car - while you can get on a bus or a train or a plane or a ship walking upright.
For further information about the uses of on, see Representing when, where, how and why: Representing where (p 4).
