How to use passive voice
Most English language coursebooks provide a reasonable coverage of how passive voice clauses are formed. However, they tend to be less good at showing what the passive voice is for, and when and where it should be used.
The grammatical system of voice helps a speaker or writer to organise a clause so that it starts and finishes with the most appropriate bits of information, ie appropriate for beginning and end position in a clause. The choice of how to begin and end a clause will depend on its context. This is why it is very difficult or impossible for learners to master the use of passive voice unless it is presented and practised in context.
