Using passive voice

Introduction

You may find it useful to see how passive voice clauses are distributed in a range of text types. For further information, see Arguments: Using passive voice to organise important points, or  Experiment reports: Using passive voice to focus on what is done, or  Explanations: Using passive voice to organise information.

The use of a passive voice clause results in the clause beginning and ending with different information than if the clause were active in voice. The choice between active and passive voice is therefore normally dependent on the context of the clause.

This file gives details of some of the ways in which passive voice may be used in context.
