Common patterns with desire verbs
Two patterns in particular are associated with verbs which are related to desires and needs.
The most common pattern is where the verb is followed by the to-infinitive which represents the situation or activity which is hoped, wanted, needed, etc:
Training is important. Intellectually handicapped people do need to acquire skills that enable them to function better. (SCMP 10/6/92)
The next most common pattern is where the verb is followed by a noun
group which represents the
thing which is prayed for, lusted after, needed, etc:
I need a holiday! (Bank of English)
