Using double-verb structures to talk about "prevention"

The first verb provides information about the prevention of the main action:

The Government should stop private schools from collecting an entire year's fees at once.

Here are some "prevention" verbs commonly used in double-verb structures:

avoid ban
bar deter
discourage disqualify
forbid * gag
keep prevent
prohibit relieve
restrain save
stop

* Note that with the exception of forbid (which is typically followed by the to-infinitive note.gif (933 bytes)), there is a tendency for "prevention" verbs to be followed by the preposition from followed by the -ing form. However, there are some exceptions: stop and prevent are both more commonly used without from; avoid is never used with from.
