Introduction

The grammar of English allows speakers and writers to represent actions and events as involving one, two, or three participants gloss.gif (923 bytes). An action or event involving just one participant, ie the subject, is typically represented in English by an intransitive verb.

This file offers a definition of intransitive verbs, with examples, plus an explanation of why verbs which are used intransitively cannot normally be used in passive voice.
