Representation

Verbs which relate a sign, a symbol or an example to its meaning or significance are commonly used in identifying clauses and, because of the reversibility of identifying clauses, can therefore also be used in passive voice:

The positive male force is represented by a figure found in one of the Grimms' fairy stories, "Iron John". (Bank of English)

The west has no intention of saving the Muslims from genocide and this is reflected by the feeble response of the so-called United Nations which is dominated by the Western powers. (Bank of English)

But the importance of the mental dimension of most sports is indicated by the fact that few athletes reach their performance peak at their physical peak, around age 18, but more usually 5 to 10 years later, when they are more seasoned and experienced. (Bank of English)
