Other changes in indirect speech

The choice of come or go in indirect speech depends on meaning. Consider:

"Please don't come alone," he said to Wendy.

We can report this by saying either:

He asked Wendy not to come alone.

He asked Wendy not to go alone.

We would use the first sentence in contexts like the following:

bullet.gif (991 bytes) The person reporting and the addressee are both at the place where Wendy is expected.
