An indirect speech structure contains a reporting verb such as say or ask. There are a large number of reporting verbs in English, eg claim, state, suggest, admit. While some of them, eg say, are neutral in meaning, others, eg claim, tell us the reporter's opinion or attitude towards what he or she is reporting.
