Thank you very much for your information. I notice today (31 Oct 97) from Ming Pao again (p. D11) that 'as well as' is followed by a past participle:
Yesterday Chinese President Jiang Zemin was welcomed by President Bill Clinton and other American political dignitaries to the White House as well as greeted with human rights groups' demonstrations.
And this example shows that 'as well as' can also be followed by other verb forms rather than -ing form.
