Linking clauses by subordination

Expressing time page 1 of 4

Introduction

A number of words are used to introduce clauses expressing time. Among the most common are: after, as, before, since, until, when and while. These words can be classified according to whether they indicate that the situation in the main clause occurred before, after or at the same time as the action introduced in the subordinate clause:

before

I'd like to ask you some questions before I look at the tape. (Bank of English)

same time

As their planet orbits their star, the pulse frequency will slowly drift because of the Doppler effect. (Bank of English)

after

The specification was drawn up after the Yard tested existing armour on the market and found it unsuitable. (Bank of English)
